CB awaits report of committee on wage hike
View(s):The Central Bank (CB) will suspend a controversial wage hike pursuant to the appointment of a special committee to examine the whole issue and its report.
On Wednesday, the Parliament Committee on Public Finance (COPF) recommended to postpone the recent salary hike of CB staff with COPF Chairman Dr. Harsha De Silva saying an independent committee should be appointed by the Finance Minister to look into the salary hike of the Central Bank employees and to suspend the salary hike until the report is submitted.
“We will follow the recommendations of the parliamentary committee,” CB Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe said. The CB Executive Officers Union said they are willing to wait for 28 days by which an independent committee is supposed to submit their report. “We are willing to wait and we are told that the report would come out in 28 days. We have requested the Governor to request the Finance Ministry to give us an opportunity to present our views to this committee,” a trade union official said.
Meanwhile at a meeting of senior CB officials on March 17, it was decided to consider the option of reducing its recent 27 – 70 per cent salary increase of employees by 25 per cent in response to widespread public concern over the massive increase.
