Influx of red onions from Jaffna brings good tidings; prices come down
An influx of red onions from Jaffna has brought down the price of red onions in markets in the south.
Traders at the Dambulla economic centre said they had been receiving large quantities of red onions; therefore, the price of a kilo, which was at Rs 350, is now going at Rs 200.
The merchant associations at the economic centre, too, said that the price of red onions had come down drastically. The association’s chairman, C.S. Siriwarena, said that they had informed the middlemen and retailers that they should reduce the price of red onion as well as other vegetables due to the influx of vegetables and provide benefits to consumers islandwide.
He also said that in lieu of the centre being 25 years old, they were holding talks with farmers and businessmen to keep the economic centre open during the night.
Farmers meanwhile complain that they are not receiving fair prices for low country vegetables such as carrots, leeks, beets, brinjal, and long beans at the centre. They said that their produce is not getting sold due to an inlux of vegetables.
They added that, given the fact that production and transport costs have increased, they should be getting a fair price. They called on the government to set up a programme to manage the prices.
