Jetwing Jaffna turns profitable in 2023/24
View(s):Jetwing’s Jaffna property has reported a profit this year as a result of the influx of tourists to the country since last year.
Jetwing Chairman Hiran Cooray told the Business Times that they expect to make for the first time a profit of close to Rs.25 million by end March 2024.
“This is the first time the company will make a profit after starting operations in Jaffna in 2016,” he said.
Jetwing Jaffna with its 55 rooms have marked out plans to build a small conference room, spa, suites and apartments, roof top swimming pool in the new wing along with bar and restaurant.
Mr. Cooray pointed out that finally after all these years Jaffna is doing well and is “buzzing” with more people needed to make investments in the region.
Post COVID, Easter attacks, aragalaya, bank interest rate hikes and thumping taxes with the arrival of increased tourists to the country, Mr. Cooray is confident that “now it will start happening”.
Jaffna can be marketed as a destination in itself as it has a unique flavour in the region, with its own customs and traditions and culture, the Delft island, Nagadeepa and its own peninsula and the Jaffna Fort that needs to now become more of a living fort like the Galle Fort, he explained.
The diaspora needs to come in and invest in the region, he noted adding that the region received a facelift after Jetwing Jaffna moved into the location and got increased numbers visiting the area with more embassy officials and diaspora visits.
