Hot weather to continue in spite of scattered showers

The Meteorology Department said showers will occur in some provinces, while a cautionary Heat Index is expected in other parts. The department predicts that the current hot weather will last until the middle of April. The decrease in wind speed and cloud cover are the main causes of the prevailing scorching weather.

Several spells of showers will occur in Eastern and Uva provinces, and showers or thundershowers are expected at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Central, and North-Western provinces during the afternoon or night, the department said.

Misty conditions can be expected in some places in the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Uva, and Western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts.

The daily maximum temperatures are expected to be around 30 degrees Celsius on most days.

Maximum rainfall was recorded in Mapalagama at 71.2 ml in Galle district, while 37.4 °C was the maximum temperature recorded in Kurunegala. The minimum temperature recorded in Nuwara Eliya was 10.3 °C. .

The heat index, which is the temperature felt on the human body, is expected to increase up to ‘caution level’ in some places in the Western, North-western, North-Central, Northern, and Southern provinces and in Ratnapura and Monaragala districts.

The temperature in several areas was above 30 °C, with Colombo being 33, Anuradhapura 36, Kandy and Mannar 34, and Ratnapura 35.

The National Building Research Organisation, which monitors air pollution, said that the quality of air in several parts of the country was deteriorating.

The NBRO said that the air quality index level at PM2.5 was unhealthy for vulnerable groups.

The current data indicates that AQI 36 for Colombo and 41.0 for Kurunegala, which is a moderate level.

Health authorities have urged the public to prioritise hydration.
