The latest addition to the country’s list of first class cricket venues occurred yesterday, when the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) funded Ratnapura District Cricket Stadium was declared open in Monarawila amidst a large gathering. This project was totally funded by SLC, through its National Development Pathway Programme upon a request made by the Ratnapura District Cricket Association, headed by Kanchana Jayaratne. Shammi Silva, and members of SLC Executive Committee members, SLC Consultant Sanath Jayasuriya, national cricketers Wanindu Hasaranga and Pathum Nissanka, as well as other dignitaries were present at the opening ceremony. The facility, which includes seven centre pitches, five side pitches and two concrete pitches, will benefit cricketers of all age groups from the Ratnapura and Kegalle districts, and will be utilised as a venue for First Xi, First Class and international matches.
