The China Sri Lanka Joint Research and Demonstration Center for Water Technology, worth 4 billion rupees, commenced in 2018 after an implementation agreement was signed between the two countries.
The construction was completed in 2021 and the building was handed over to the University of Peradeniya. The centre is in operation now under Director Dr Sujithra Weragoda.
This centre is poised to become a hub for inter-disciplinary collaboration, fostering innovation and solutions to address the pressing water challenges facing Sri Lanka and beyond.
A plaque to commemorate the handing over was installed with Vice Chancellor Professor M D Lamawansa and Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Zhang Yaping, and other stakeholders of the Ministry of Water Supply.
Photograph shows Prof Lamawansa and Prof Zhang jointly opening the ceremonial plaque.
