The University of Peradeniya could collect data of atmospheric conditions not only in the country, but in the region in the future, with the installation of equipment donated to the University by the Institute of Atmospheric Physics Chinese Academy of Sciences, officials said.
The equipment has been installed at the University premises by Chinese scientists who had been working for nearly a month on the installation.
The offer by the Chinese academics was the end result of nearly four years of negotiations, Professor Tilak Bandara said. “It is of much use both to the students of the University and also to the country.”
He said that in the past the University had to seek data from other institutions in the country for the research and teaching purposes, but with the installation of the equipment they need no longer depend on them.
At the moment, they are engaged in studying the atmospheric situation around the country, but it is hoped with the new equipment, they would be able to monitor and collect regional atmospheric data, Professor Bandara said.
