Nalanda Innovation Hub: A space to unlock Ratnapura’s entrepreneurial skills
View(s):Built in memory of late MP Nalanda Ellawala, the Nalanda Innovation Hub that opened on March 26, in the heart of Ratnapura aims to be a nucleus of collaboration, creativity, and sustainable business practices in the region.
Founded by Visaka Ellawala, the Nalanda Innovation Hub is inspired by Mr Ellawala, who left an enduring legacy of public service and community development. Speaking at the inauguration, Visaka Ellawala emphasised the hub’s mission: “We believe that by providing a platform for collaboration and innovation, we can unlock the entrepreneurial spirit of Ratnapura and drive sustainable development in the gem-rich region,” she noted.
The hub’s cutting-edge facilities, including meeting rooms, an open theatre and coffee shops, provide a conducive environment for entrepreneurs and changemakers to converge, exchange ideas, and bring innovative projects to fruition.
The Nalanda Innovation Hub is also partnering with well known organizations like the Good Market and TRACE.
“We are thrilled to extend the Good Market experience to Ratnapura through our collaboration with the Nalanda Innovation Hub. By empowering local entrepreneurs and promoting sustainable practices, we aim to create positive impact and foster inclusive economic growth in the gem-rich region,” said Achala Samaradivakara, Co-founder of Good Market.
Similarly, TRACE (Technologically Re-Awakening Culture of Excellence) aligns with the Nalanda Innovation Hub to promote excellence through technology and innovation. With a focus on mentorship, guidance, and fostering innovation among youth, TRACE seeks to propel Ratnapura onto the global stage and contribute to its holistic development.

Our partner-ship with the Nalanda Innovation Hub underscores our commitment to fostering excellence and driving sustain-able development in Ratnapura,” commented Heminda Jayaweera, Vice President/Executive Director, TRACE.
Other partners of the Nalanda Innovation Hub include the Mother Sri Lanka (MSL) movement for promoting local crafts and entrepreneurship founded by Dr. Janaki Kuruppu and Theertha, the brainchild of Prof. Jagath Weerasinghe, which is a platform for empowering artists through workshops and exhibitions locally & globally. Founded in 2016, MSL has an impressive track record for supporting over 150 micro-entrepreneurs, 1000 families directly, and 5000 families indirectly to date. Theertha, meanwhile, has worked closely with the local art/creative community since 2000 to create an inclusive and equitable landscape that embraces and celebrates diversity.
