Pretty in pink; Tabebuia rosea in all its glory
View(s):Excessive heat and dry weather conditions during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year period caused an explosion of pink-hued flowers in the country’s ornamental rosy trumpet (Tabebuia rosea) or “robarosia” trees this season.
The display was so vibrant that it gave rise to widespread public admiration. And since it coincided with the blooming of cherry blossoms in countries like USA and Japan, some even called them “local sakura”.
Under the trees, which can grow up to 30 metres and are usually found on roadsides, universities and parks, there were carpets of fallen flowers. Director (Technology Transfer and Research) at Department of National Botanical Gardens Dr. Achala Attanayake said the variety has its origins in South America. It provides shade during the rainy season, when its leaves grow, and produce flowers in the dry season. “These days the conditions are just right for them to produce flowers,” she said.
