HSBC’s 3rd edition of Future Lions Golf launched
The third edition of the HSBC Future Lions Golf Grassroots Programme 2024 was launched with the blessings of Sri Lanka Golf at the Royal Colombo Golf Club on Thursday. The programme aims to introduce golf to children aged between 9 to 12 across Sri Lanka, providing them with the opportunity to develop skills and pursue the sport with passion.
Since its inception in 2017, the programme has benefited over 1200 children. Notably, through standard training, over 50 children have participated in national and regional golf competitions across the island. Some have progressed to the national junior squad, including rising star Adithya Weerasinghe from Anuradhapura, who has competed in local and international tournaments as a junior golfer.
The programme will feature a regional academy with coaching clinics led by experienced golf professionals for young golfers of all skill levels. The ‘Girls on Par’ initiative, introduced last year, aims to boost the participation and representation of young girls. Niloo Jayatileke, the Chairperson of the Junior Golf Development Sub Committee, highlighted the success of the previous editions.
Jayatileke emphasised the programme’s role in elevating junior golf and thanked the team for supporting young talents to become future champions. The Sri Lanka Golf plans to conduct the programme between May and July, with five leading golf clubs collaborating to ensure its success. Girls and boys aged 9 to 12 are invited to join the grassroots programme and discover the sport under the guidance of coaches and instructors at the designated locations.
