A new hotline to combat maritime crime was introduced with the launch of operation ‘Disi Rela’, a joint maritime security operation by the Australian Border Force (ABF) and the Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) in Colombo this week.
The hotline 041 750 1400 is open 24 hours for anonymous complaints on suspicious or illegal maritime activities.
‘Disi Rela’ or “keeping a watchful eye over the maritime environment”, was officially launched on Monday (22) with the Director General (Operations) Navy, Rear Admiral Nishantha Peiris, Deputy Commander Joint Agency Task Force – Operation Sovereign Borders Mark Whitechurch, Director General of SLCG Rear Admiral Pujitha Vithana and the Australian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Paul Stephens holding a press briefing.
The week-long programme from Dickowita to Chilaw, which concludes today, consisted of public engagement, round-table discussions, strategic communication and intelligence workshops held by expert trainers from the Australian Department of Home Affairs.
“The genesis of operation ‘Disi Rela’ lies in the proposal put forth by the Australian Border Force aiming to foster collaboration and enhance maritime security capabilities between the nations,” said Rear Admiral Peiris. “Thanks to our collective efforts, now we have successfully achieved zero chances of human smuggling since the middle of last year,” he said.
