Gaza crisis: UNRWA thanks President and Govt, issues global appeal for more funds
View(s):The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) expressed its gratitude to President Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Sri Lankan government for the country’s financial contribution in response to the crisis in the Gaza Strip.
The letter from UNRWA Commissioner-General Phillippe Lazzarini said that more than two million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, the majority of whom are Palestinian refugees under the agency’s mandate, are facing a humanitarian catastrophe.
“Our dedicated staff continues to deliver critical assistance in the most challenging of circumstances, and we continue to call on all parties to adhere to international humanitarian law, protect civilians and infrastructure, and ensure a meaningful and continuous supply of humanitarian aid across Gaza,” he said.
The letter also said that the contribution made to the UNRWA flash appeal will help the agency respond to the critical humanitarian needs of the people in Gaza, including more than a million people sheltering in their facilities.
According to the letter, the agency pointed out that its ability to respond in Gaza and elsewhere has been weakened by years of underfunding of its programme budget. Therefore, UNRWA continues to urge partners to give it means to implement its mandate.
