A/L to start after O/L exam to make up for lost time: Minister
View(s):The Education Ministry plans to begin GCE Advanced Level (A/L) lessons for students immediately following the conclusion of the GCE Ordinary Level (O/L) Examination.
Education Minister Dr Susil Premajayantha said this will be part of the initiative to make up for coursework and exams missed because of previous school closures.
The Minister said this at the launch of the official online radio station, NIE Visual Radio, of the National Institute of Education (NIE), Maharagama.
Minister Premajayantha added that teachers must have a strong commitment to fulfill this challenging task.
3,000 teachers are currently being recruited to teach A/L Science, Math, Technology, and Foreign Languages to achieve this goal, he said.
“Plans are in place to hire 10,000 teachers provincially. By early July, 2,553 teachers will be accepted into national schools. Aside from this, 500 graduate teachers will be hired to teach English upon Cabinet approval, as the lack of English teachers continues to be a major concern. To make up for the shortfall, 1,000 retired educators will be brought back to duty,” a senior official of the Ministry said.
The Ministry expects the ongoing trial deferring the recruitment of development officers to be concluded on a positive note in mid-May.
The Minister emphasised that the goal of implementing these steps is to avoid potential delays in schoolchildren’s entry into higher education and to resume academic activities that were interrupted in the past.
“To make it successful, everyone’s dedication and support is essential in this regard.” -NA
