CCS wins Inter-University Debate Competition 2024
View(s):The Inter-University Debate Competition, hosted by the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon (IChemC), took place on April 27, 2024, at the IChemC headquarters, Rajagiriya. Chemistry undergraduates from various universities enthusiastically participated in the event. Dr. Kushan Weerasiri, Chairperson of the Inter-University Debate Committee, delivered the welcome address, setting the stage for the engaging competition. Dr. Keerthi Attanayake, Secretary of Educational Affairs, provided insights into the educational initiatives undertaken by IChemC at tertiary and secondary education levels. Additionally, during the speech, the degree programmes offered by the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon—BSc (Hons) in Chemical Science, GIC (Graduateship in Chemistry), and DLT (Diploma in Laboratory Technology)—were detailed.

The debates unfolded in a single session, where each team competed against all others using the league method. A designated chairperson chaired the session, while a panel of three experts judged the proceedings. The competition witnessed dynamic exchanges of opinions and intellect as young debaters engaged in verbal battles, passionately representing their alma maters.
Ultimately, the team from the College of Chemical Sciences (CCS) emerged victorious, with the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and the University of Colombo securing 2nd and 3rd places, respectively. The JNO Fernando Memorial Trophy, accompanied by cash prizes and certificates for the winning teams, will be awarded at the Annual Sessions of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon in June 2024. Dr. Kushan Weerasiri concluded the event with a vote of thanks, acknowledging the contributions of all involved.
The success of the event is attributed to the dedication and commitment of the Inter-University Debate Committee. The Inter-University Debate Competition, an annual event organised by IChemC, serves as a platform to cultivate intellectual discussions through logical reasoning and creative argumentation among aspiring young scientists, while also showcasing the talents of undergraduates from across the country.
