The Examinations Department is stepping up security measures for the GCE (Ordinary Level) examination starting on Monday, across more than 3,000 centres in the country.

Commissioner General of Examinations Amith Jayasundara told the Education Times that a special team comprising of Ministry and Departmental officials will be deployed to visit examination centres to supervise how the examination is conducted.

A special feature would be that only the chief examination officer and their deputy will be allowed to carry mobile phones into the examination hall, and all other staff would not be allowed to do so.

The restrictions have been tightened after the Agriculture II paper leaked via mobile phone at the last exam. Investigations revealed the paper had been leaked from a centre in Moratuwa to a person in Ampara.

Mr Jayasundara explained that this time they have made the penalties higher in the event a student is detected with a mobile inside the examination centre. Bluetooth devices and smartwatches are also among the banned items.

A total of 459,979 candidates will be sitting the O/L examination with 387,648 of them first time candidates from schools, and 65,731 private candidates.

The Department has set up 3,527 examination centres. Among them is a centre at the Apeksha Hospital in Maharagama where 10 candidates undergoing treatment for cancer will also be sitting the examination.

In addition, 535 coordinating centres have been set up.

Meanwhile, to reduce issues around paper marking, the Ministry has already obtained the allocations to make the payments.
