May Day brings in the crowds

Political parties and trade unions held their May Day events, showcasing their strength at gathering crowds in Colombo and around the country.

The parties preparing for upcoming elections unofficially launched their election campaigns, and expressed their aspirations in their speeches.

The main parties UNP, SJB, NPP, SLPP held their rallies in Colombo, while the SLFP held their rally at Gampaha. Each party focused on the upcoming polls.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe took part in the United National Party event held at Maligawatte and said that political parties should not engage in traditional politics and appealed to the JVP and SJB to join them to secure the economy for the youth. Following the event, the UNP arranged a musical show showcasing Indian artistes.

SJB leader Sajith Premadasa told their rally at Chatham Street the next May Day rally would be held under their Government.

Former President of Sri Lanka and SLPP leader Mahinda Rajapaksa said at their rally that the candidate backed by them would emerge victorious.

NPP leader Anura Dissanayake said that theirs was no longer a party but a movement representing all communities that will change the nation. The NPP held rallies in Colombo, Matara, Anuradhapura and Jaffna.

An SLFP faction said at their May Day event in Gampaha that they will make Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe their candidate.

Other parties, civil societies, and trade unions held May Day events all over the country.

A majority of the parties decided to have their rallies on the streets. Buses were used to draw crowds for the rallies.
