From Al Hambra to The Ramada: A family hotel story of 50 years
View(s):Originally known as the Al Hambra and then the Holiday Inn, it was one of the first major hotels to come up after the famous old colonial hotels, the Galle Face Hotel, Mount Lavinia Hotel and the Taprobane. It was wholly owned by Jabir A. Cader, the Colombo Mayor at the time, and the first by a Sri Lankan family when the other big new hotels in Colombo at the time were the Oberoi and the Intercontinental.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe who was also at the gala event recalled his youth and the many visits to the hotel in the 1970s with friends especially after a 9.30 movie usually at a cinema owned but the Cader family. He compared prices of the fare then to now.
He urged the Cader family to expand their business out of Colombo as well and assured the government’s support for the task.
