The Sri Lankan chess team achieved a remarkable feat by clinching the second runners-up position in the prestigious Asian Cities Chess Team Championship 2024, held in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia. The tournament, held through April 21 to 29, witnessed intense competition among teams from across the continent.

Organised by the Chess Federation of Russia on behalf of the Asian Chess Federation and FIDE, the championship adopted a challenging nine-round Swiss format, testing the strategic acumen and resilience of participating teams.

Under the banner of Colombo City, Sri Lanka, the team displayed exceptional skill and determination to secure their place on the podium. This achievement marks a significant milestone for Sri Lankan chess, representing the highest victory in a team event on the global stage.

The Sri Lankan team, consisting of IM Harshana Thilakarathne, IM Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage, Kosala Sandeepa Chamikara Amarathunga, Dinujaya Kodithuwakku, and led by non-playing captain Sanjeewa Anuradha, showcased their talent and teamwork throughout the championship.
