Opposition leader raises question on teacher recruitment

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa voiced concerns in Parliament on Friday (10) that 1,200 graduates in Commerce have applied to fill teacher vacancies in the Western Province, but, to date, none of them have been recruited.

Mr Premadasa said that 2,951 have already been recruited but a shortage of 6,000 still exists.

In response to his concerns, Education Minister Dr Susil Premajayantha said that, in order to economise, the government has chosen to hire 23,000 graduate development officers to teacher services.

Their examination was previously set for  March 25, 2023 but was postponed due to a court ruling as 33 individuals objected, requesting the age limit be raised to 45 years. Others asked that the appointments be given to them without an examination, Minister Premajayantha added.

The Ministry has been unable to conduct the examination since the court issued a restraining order on March 23, 2023.

To make up for the shortfall, the cabinet decision to bring retired and resigned teachers back has also been hindered due to Development Officers’ petitioning the Court of Appeal to halt it until their appointments are made.

As a result, the Court of Appeal has overturned the restraining order in question, which had been implemented in order to gather retired and resigned teachers into groups.

The Supreme Court is currently hearing the revocation of the standing order that defers hiring retired and resigned teachers. (NA)
