Environmentalists have expressed concern over the safety of the Anawilundawa Ramsar wetland as a private land owner had been illegally filling land using waste metal.

Environmentalist Ajith Gihan of the Wayamaba Handa environmental organisation pointed out that the Anawilundawa Ramsar wetland has been once more threatened yet none of the environmental authorities have given attention to the matter and taken action.

According to him, the waste metal could not be exposed to the environment as it is considered a hazardous substance. He pointed out that harmful heavy metals would get exposed to weather conditions and could react and release chemicals and particles to the soil and reach ground water.

The accumulation of such metals in the fish and wildlife make the animals sick; even people could get metal poisoning by consuming fish which are exposed to chemicals, he said.
