Body of man who drowned saving Ukrainian tourist yet to be retrieved
View(s):Strong currents preventing retrieval operations
A three-wheel driver who saved the life of a foreign tourist caught in a strong sea current at Ahangama had fallen victim to the current and drowned.
For a week the Police and residents have been trying to salvage the body wedged between two rocks, but were unsuccessful due to the strong currents.
The incident occurred when three tourists went to the beach behind the Ahangama hotel school. A Ukrainian female had got into the sea for a swim, got caught in a current and been swept out to sea.
The man had saved the woman by taking her to a large rock away from the shore. But when he was trying to make it back to shore he was trapped by the current. He was tossed towards the shore and got wedged in a crevice between two rocks near the shore.
Eyewitnesses said the
current was strong and
therefore the man’s head got stuck between the rocks
and drowned as a result. The body could not be retrieved for six days as the current remained strong.
Several attempts had
been made to salvage the body, but it had not been possible
to retrieve the body
as of yesterday.
Officer in Charge at Ahangama Police, CI Sumith Jayaweera said that the deceased was a resident of Aranwela south in Ahangama, identified as Jayaweera Patabendige Buddika Parabath (40) a father of two.
The three tourists had stayed at a hotel a kilometre away from the location where the incident occurred. The female who was rescued left Sri Lanka on Tuesday (7), and was identified as 28-year-old Niskrina Widivathki.
