With more than a century’s traditions behind them, Bishop’s College Colombo (BC) and S. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia (STC) are sister schools and this year, resurrecting a tradition that began two decades ago, they will be collaborating to present “Back to Stage”, a show that features the alumni of both schools.

A varied and exciting array of performances is on the programme for the show presented by the Past Pupils Association of Bishop’s College and the Old Boys Association of S. Thomas College, that will go on the boards at the Bishop’s College auditorium on May 17 and 18 at 7 p.m.

This concert will bring to stage some unique combinations between the two schools; father-son, mother- daughter, brother-sister, husband- wife performances, even extending to three generations of family.

Additionally, present pupils of the two schools will also be performing and audiences can look forward to seeing the Bishop’s College choir, Canto Perpetua and the Brass Band of S. Thomas’ College. For the students this show presents a different experience, one they are excited about. Items such as freestyle dances and Bharatha fusion will be presented too, further enhancing the range of performances.

The last production by the alumni of BC and STC was the musical ‘Divorce Me Darling’. However, after eight years of no joint productions, this concert is quite literally, a ‘back to stage’ event for those participating. As Assistant Director from BC, Shyama Perera points out, this form of concert allows the past pupils more flexibility to participate, given their busy schedules, due to the different items they will be performing. A wide range of entertainment can be expected in a much more practical and budget-friendly manner.

The choir, which includes alumni selected through multiple rounds of auditions, is being coached by Sanjeev Jayaratnam, whose own award winning male voice ensemble ‘Revelations’ group will also be performing at the show. Other well known musicians –  Dr. Gananath Dasanayake and Dr. Sean Amarasekara will also be performing. Sanjeev is excited for the different genres of music to be performed to a live audience. The concert has received tremendous support from the old boys, he adds.

Sonali Dias,  Co-chair of the project from the BC PPA, highlights that this year, Bishop’s College is celebrating their 150th anniversary and many events are planned such as orations and the launch of a coffee table book. This concert is also a way of giving back to the institution that moulded them.

Co-Chair of the project from the STC OBA, Rukshan Kuru Uthumpala, says this concert is a very nostalgic experience of re-living former school productions.

Tickets for Back to Stage ranging from Rs. 5500 to Rs. 1,500 (Balcony) are available at the Bishop’s College Auditorium.
