View(s):May Day rallies and the mindset of the people
We have seen the impact of the leading political parties in the recently held May Day rallies. The crowd present at the May rallies clearly and strongly depict the mindset of the people who are mostly fed up with the political parties they have voted for so far in the elections and what the winning party had done to the country.
When we think of major parties, the UNP – a grand old party which was established by the great UNP stalwart D.S. Senanayake has lost its image and reputation in the minds of the people. The next renowned national party, the SLFP founded by the popular leader S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike and later led by many other popular leaders has also lost its glory. The Pohottuwa is in the doldrums after President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had to leave office due to the protests and in the aftermath Ranil Wickremesinghe was appointed as President with the Parliamentary support of 134 members of the SLPP.
After this political turbulence, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna has emerged with a new name of NPP. Its political meetings and rallies are crowded and the masses seem to presume that NPP has not been given an opportunity hitherto to govern the country and now an opportunity should be given to them to test their credibility and capability
We humbly request the President to adhere the constitutional guidelines and either hold the Presidential election first or Parliamentary election and give the people their freedom to elect a new president and a new parliament.
