Soul Sounds: Celebrating 20 years

Celebrating two decades of soulful melodies and harmonious rhythms, Soul Sounds, Sri Lanka’s premier female ensemble, is poised to return to the world of competitive choral singing at the upcoming World Choir Games which will be held in Auckland, New Zealand this July. The choir last participated in this prestigious competition in 2008, where they nabbed three gold medals across the Gospel, Pop, and Folk categories and are gearing up for a momentous comeback.

In a bid to mark their 20th anniversary with a flourish, Soul Sounds will be vying for top honours once again. “Given that Soul Sounds is celebrating 20 years this year, we thought it apt to compete, and also give the newer members a chance to experience what it takes to compete internationally,” shares Soundarie David Rodrigo, music director.

In addition to their competition performances, Soul Sounds will take part in special events such as
friendship concerts to a heartfelt performance for the Sri Lankan community in Auckland.

As part of an initiative to raise funds for this exhilarating journey, Soul Sounds presents ‘Order My Steps’, an evening of Gospel music on May 16 at the Lionel Wendt Theatre. As the choir has carefully chosen to compete in Gospel and Folk categories at this year’s World Choir Games, aligning with their passion and expertise, this Gospel special not only gives the audience a taste of what is expected in Auckland, but also promises to captivate both heart and soul.

“Gospel is very special to our hearts,” emphasises Soundarie. “The audience can expect to hear not just good and soulful singing but also be uplifted by the messages the songs bring out.”

What sets Soul Sounds apart is not only their exceptional talent but also their unwavering commitment to inclusivity and authenticity. “There are no guest performers, but you will hear the voices of almost all the girls of Soul Sounds,” says Soundarie, highlighting the ensemble’s unity and cohesion. Accompanying the choir will be Soundarie herself on piano, along with two musicians who have worked very closely with the choir over the years: Neranjan De Silva on keyboard and Christopher Prins on drums. The choir will also be backed by Prabasara on lead guitar and Pradeep Rodrigo on bass.

‘Order My Steps’ will take place
on May 16 at the Lionel Wendt Theatre  at 7.30 p.m.

Tickets priced at Rs 5000, Rs 4000, Rs 3000, Rs 2000, and Rs 1500 (Balcony) are available at the Lionel Wendt. Tickets can be pre-booked via WhatsApp on +94785003344.
