Unions oppose start of A/L classes after O/L
View(s):Teacher unions have expressed concern over the Government’s move to commence the GCE Advanced Level classes upon completion of the GCE Ordinary Level examination.
General Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers Union Joseph Stalin said the move would create a series of issues, including space issues in schools, and pointed to the lack of teachers.
“Without knowing which student passed the Ordinary Level examination, all students would have to be accommodated. Therefore more classes have to be set up. This is only one practical issue,” he said.
As the previous batches still attend class until their Advance Level exam, Mr Stalin said, new classes had to be set up for these students.
The trade unionist demanded that the Education Ministry set up a system for selecting students who passed the exam and separate them into different streams such as arts, commerce or science.
“Students with good results and high ranks often go for better schools, therefore the education authorities have to also provide the students a way to do that as well,” he added.
He said the decision cannot be implemented without finding solutions for practical issues.
The Cabinet approved the move amidst negative reactions of the teacher trade unions.
As the Examinations Department takes at least three months to release exam results, students tend to drop off from school, creating social issues. The Cabinet decision was made to keep students engaged in studies.
