Several designers participated in the AISSA Innovation Competition and Exhibition which was held by the All-Island School Science Association with the invention and science exhibition (AISSA Expo- 2024) at the Nelum Pokuna. Five of the best new designs (top 5) were selected. These were by: Litula Thewsara De Silva, Dilum Dilshan, Nilmit Yahansa, Binul Methdinu, and Adheesha Mithun.

The inventions were selected based on the concepts of new creative idea, novelty, creative ability, and presentation ability.

15-year-old Lithula, a student of Maththumagala Wp/Kel Karunaratne Buddhist National School, created a remote sky stick launcher. With a voice command through the mobile phone, sky sticks can be safely launched from a distance of 100m and for this he used the latest technology. This invention helps avoid accidents.

Teachers, who are well aware of his talents’, said that Lithula, who is also a student leader of the school, is a student who excels in innovation as well as education.

Lithula’s design has been selected for the second round of the all-island competition for young inventors. Lithula has also applied for a patent license for this new design.

His next effort is to make a new invention to prevent the damage caused to crops by monkeys. Lithula who is currently studying in the English medium, was able to showcase his creativity for the first time through the intervention of Ven Hanguranketha Shanthajeeva Thero. Lithula gratefully recalled that Nijamani Palika, the principal, Dhananjaya Vaidyasekara, who is in charge of the invention unit, and Felina Ondachchi, who is in charge of the school’s English medium department, recognised his abilities and encouraged him.
