University properties are left unattended, with the security officials also joining the ongoing strike by the non-academic staff.
The security of 2500 acres of land, buildings, and equipment in the laboratories is at stake, Federation of University Teachers Association President Dr. Ruchika Fernando told journalists.
He said there must be avenues for the academic staff to enter and continue to lecture the students. Illustrating a point, he said that he was unable to seek the assistance of security to give a key to a member of the staff.
He said FUTA was not against their demands, but the security of the university was also a matter of concern.
Commenting on concerns raised by Dr. Fernando, a non-academic staff union leader asked whether FUTA had forgotten issues it created when students were unable to follow lectures during its strike demanding a pay hike.
