Introduce mini-cruises around the island

Further to your report on the government’s plans to restore 15 forts to develop tourism (Business Times, May 12), another idea may be to introduce mini-cruises around the island.

A century ago the Lady McCallum sailed fortnightly from Colombo to various Sri Lankan ports promising ‘good accommodation’ and ‘excellent cuisine’. The ports of call were: Galle, Hambantota, Kalkudah (during the NE monsoon) or Batticaloa (during SW monsoon) and Trincomalee. Passengers could enjoy magnificent views of Sri Lanka’s coastline and amazing sights of Adam’s Peak and Piduruthalagala.

The cost then for the 10-day voyage was Rs. 100.

A bouquet for exemplary service; keep up the good work

At a time when tales of bureaucratic hurdles and inefficiencies in the state sector often dominate conversations, I find it necessary to share a recent experience that was somewhat different.

Recently, I had to accompany a colleague visiting from overseas to the EPF Division of the Department of Labour at Narahenpita to claim his EPF benefits. Despite our apprehensions about bureaucratic delays, our encounter with the Deputy Commissioner was remarkable.

Understanding the urgency of our situation, she proposed an alternative solution when she couldn’t accommodate our request on the spot due to a full schedule. She suggested authorising me to act on my friend’s behalf, demonstrating a flexibility and empathy that is often rare in such circumstances.

Following her advice, I promptly arranged an online appointment and returned on the designated day. From the moment I arrived,
I was greeted warmly by a multilingual Lady security officer who guided me through the process with patience and kindness.

Inside, the efficiency and professionalism of the staff were truly commendable. With two well-organised seated queues in the air-conditioned comfort, I completed the entire process in just two hours. Despite the volume of applicants, there was no compromise on courtesy or attention to detail.

I was particularly impressed by the promptness of the payment process. Within three days, I received an SMS notification from the EPF Division Central Bank of Sri Lanka confirming the crediting of funds—an astonishing turnaround compared to my previous experiences with a private provident fund.

In a climate where criticism of state sector employees often overshadows recognition of their hard work, it is essential to acknowledge and celebrate instances of exemplary service. My heartfelt appreciation goes out to all the dedicated staff at the EPF Division, Narahenpita and the CBSL Payment Division. Their commitment to efficiency and professionalism should not go unnoticed.

Please keep up the good work.
