Due to the southwest monsoon, the Department of Meteorology predicts that heavy showers and winds will continue over the next 24 hours.

Heavy showers above 100 millimetres are likely at some places in the Sabaragamuwa Province and in the Nuwara-Eliya District and the department has also issued a ‘Red’ warning for the two regions.

An advisory for strong winds has been issued for the western slopes of the central hills, the Northern, North-Central, Western, Southern, and North-Western provinces, as well as for the Trincomalee District in the Eastern Province.

Citing data from Indian forecasters, the local weather office said that the low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression and is predicted to continue to move in the northeast direction. It would concentrate into a cyclonic storm over the east-central Bay of Bengal, intensifying into a severe cyclonic storm over the same region.

The duty meteorologist warns that the sea areas extending from Mannar, Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota via Pottuvil will be rough at times with strong, gusty winds of up to 60 to 70 kilometres per hour.

Officials said the landslide warning issued by the National Building Research Organisation for eight districts was still in effect.

The Department of Irrigation has warned of minor flood risk in the areas around Kalu Ganga, Attanagalu Oya, Kuda Ganga, and Nilwala Ganga.

Irrigation Department Director S.P.C. Sugeeshwara, who is in charge of hydrology and disaster management, told the Sunday Times that water levels were higher in the Kuda Ganga and Attanagalu Oya, and if the rains continued, the water levels in the Kalu Ganga and Nilwala rivers would also rise.

“In Attanagalu Oya, as of Friday, it is at a minor flood level. The low-level areas are still inundated, and the situation might get worse,” he said.

The total water capacity of the main reservoirs has reached up to 80%.

But the main reservoirs have started spilling, he said. Four spill gates of Deduru Oya in Kurunegala were opened, and six spill gates of the Thabbowa reservoir in the Puttalam District have been opened. The sluice gates at Rajanganaya and Angamuwa will also be eventually opened, he said.
