Adverse weather: Vesak week bookings drop by 50 percent in Nuwara Eliya

Heavy rains have dampened the hopes of the tourism sector in Nuwara Eliya during the long Vesak holidays, with some hotels recording 50 percent booking cancellations by local visitors, according to hoteliers.

They said most local visitors cut short their stay and left the area due to heavy winds and rains, while others cancelled the bookings the day before their scheduled arrival.

Adding to the hoteliers’ woes were the power failures due to the adverse weather.

Nuwara Eliya’s former mayor and Alpine Hotel chairman, Mahinda Dodampegamage, told the Sunday Times that the authorities should take advantage of the rainy season to attract more foreign tourists. During the rainy season, 21 waterfalls in the area get activated, and the authorities should encourage foreigners, particularly the Maldivians, who have a special liking for waterfalls, to visit Nuwara Eliya.
