Gamini Marapana funeral today
View(s):President’s Counsel Gamini Marapana passed away last morning after a prolonged illness. He was 82 years of age.
His remains will be at 103, Barnes Place, Colombo 7 for the public to pay their final respects. The final rites will be conducted today (26) at 6 pm at the Borella general cemetery.
Mr Marapana was educated at St Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, where he was a member of the College first XI in both cricket and hockey. He later obtained an honours degree in Law from the University of Peradeniya. He also served as a lecturer at Sri Lanka Law College and was a member of its Board of Examiners.
He appeared in a number of high profile cases throughout his long and distinguished legal career. He was the husband of Suranganee Marapana, former Deputy General Manager (Legal) at Bank of Ceylon, and was the father of President’s Counsel Navin Marapana and father-in-law of attorney-at-law Laksara Marapana. He was also the older brother of former Minister and President’s Counsel Tilak Marapana.
Mr Marapana hailed from a family of lawyers. His father was a former District Judge from Ratnapura.
Mr Marapana served as the Vice President of the Sri Lanka Petroleum Corporation in 1977, and also served a brief stint as Chairman of the Colombo Port City Economic Commission.
