Teacher Unions have divided opinions on what actions to take to urge the Government to resolve salary anomalies.

While a teacher principal trade union alliance was planning a series of protests in the upcoming weeks, suddenly a strike action had been called by a fraction of unions.

Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) General Secretary Joseph Stalin said they had not given up the struggle on resolving salary anomalies.

According to him, a protest calling on the Government to provide the due salary increase and resolve the salary anomalies was scheduled for June 7 and 12 after school hours. If the Government does not respond to their move positively they had planned to bring teachers and principals from rural areas to Colombo and hold a strong protest urging the Government to resolve their issues, he said.

Mr Stalin said that the recent teachers strike was not orchestrated by them but was a move by the Government to thwart their trade union action by create divisions among trade unions.

Ceylon Teachers Services Union (CTSU) Secretary Mahinda Jayasinghe said that their union representing teachers and principals did not take part in the strike this week.

National Collective Against Teachers’ and Principals’ Salary Disparities convener Rev Ulapane Sumangala thero said that their strike action was a success.

He alleged that a few teacher unions which support the Government did not join their trade union action. He added that both principals and teachers had shown their actions and said that they do not stand with the traditional teacher unions which are about to go extinct.

However the Education Ministry said that schools were not closed and school activities were carried out indifferently despite the teachers’ protest.
