University students miss scholarships abroad due to non-academic staff strike
View(s):University admissions, applications for foreign scholarships and convocations have been held up due to an ongoing trade union action by non-academic staff in State universities.
University Grants Commission Chairman Prof Sampath Amarautnga said that the strike has severely affected the administration and students have been affected.
He urged the Government to amend existing laws to prevent such strikes.
He said they were in the process of making arrangements to admit some 45,000 students when the strike broke out, and the admission programme has been affected as the functions of the National Admission Commission have been hindered with some 35 non-academic staff boycotting the meetings.
Students have not been able to apply for the US scholarships as well as Chinese scholarships due to the strike.
Convocations in several universities, too, have been held up.
Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said that non-academic staff were striking over a salary anomaly and he has asked the Treasury to make provisions to settle the issue in the next budget.
“Currently we do not have provisions in the budget to settle the issue immediately,” he added. He appealed to the staff to return to work. (DWI)
