Foreign job quota, bank loans, health benefits for ex-soldiers: State Minister of Defence
View(s):Discussions have been held with Health Minister Dr Ramesh Pathirana to provide services on priority basis for retired soldiers and their families at State hospitals, State Minister of Defence Premitha Bandara Tennakoon said.
He made the remarks while attending a programme organised by the Sri Lanka Army to look into the welfare and administrative affairs of retired/medically retired military personnel and family members of soldiers held yesterday (1) at the Army Volunteer Force Training School in Diyatalawa
Mr Tennakoon added that another programme aimed at providing priority service to them when obtaining services from State banks and other Government institutions is also to be implemented.
A proposed subsidised loan scheme is being considered for serving and retired soldiers, and discussions are in progress with the chairman of the Bank of Ceylon in this regard, he said.
In addition, the President has submitted a Cabinet paper to Parliament on providing land to soldiers and their family members on priority basis under the ‘Urumaya’ programme of providing freehold deeds for land. Retired veterans and families will be able to get these services in the future through the Divisional Secretariats.
State Minister Tennakoon further stated that discussions were held with the Foreign Ministry to allocate a job quota for retired veterans and family members when the Government sends workers for foreign employment.
Additional District Secretaries of Badulla and Monaragala, senior military officers, State officials, a large number of soldiers and their family members attended the event.
