The government has issued an extraordinary gazette notification allowing Sri Lankans living overseas and are unable to obtain dual citizenship due to existing laws in their respective countries to obtain a permanent residence visa.

The gazette, issued by the Ministry of Public Security under the Immigrants and Emigrants Act, states that a permanent residence visa can be granted and issued to a person of Sri Lankan descent or whose citizenship of Sri Lanka has ceased after obtaining citizenship in another country, their non-Sri Lankan spouse, and their children.

The person making the application for a permanent residence visa will be required to pay US$1000, while a non-Sri Lankan spouse and a child will be charged US$ 400 each.

Those holding a permanent residence visa will be entitled to enter and remain in Sri Lanka, have access to education, health, and other public services, engage in any lawful occupation, business, or commercial activity, and inherit, transfer, or alienate any property in the country.
