Cygnus House wins big at Lyceum Kurunegala Athletic Meet

In a display of sheer athleticism and determination, Cygnus House soared to victory at the Inter-House Athletic Meet of Lyceum International School, Kurunegala for the fourth consecutive year. The event, held at the SLNG ground in Kurunegala, witnessed intense competition among the houses of Aquila, Cetus, Cygnus, and Ursa.

In a display of dominance, Cygnus House emerged victorious for the fourth consecutive year, clinching the championship with a total of 291 points. Cetus secured the runners-up position with 281 points, while Ursa claimed third place with 217 points, and Aquila followed with 190 points.

Addressing the gathering, Chandana Basnayake, the Principal of Lyceum International School, Kurunegala, emphasised the significance of sportsmanship, stating that the event was beyond a competition. He also expressed gratitude to parents for their understanding, cooperation, and support towards the success of the Lyceum Kurunegala Athletic Meet.

The event also recognised individual achievements across various age groups, with winners in categories ranging from Under-8 to Under-16, for both girls and boys. Cetus House dominated the Under-16 age category as Gawesha Dharmarathne claimed the girls’ title while her team mate Ahmed Fahmy shared the boys’ title alongside Gawesh Nanayakkara of Ursa House.

Firdous Sajidh and Sajidur Rahman of Cygnus House shared the Under-14 boys’ championship, while Pudamsa Imbulana of Cetus House claimed its girls’ title. Gayith Abeysinghe of Cygnus House and Senulya Dissanayake of Ursa House were the champions in the Under-12 age category, winning the boys’ and girls’ titles respectively.

Pamod Bonula of Ursa House won the Under-10 boys’ championship, while Yelinsa Rajakaruna of Aquila House claimed its girls’ title. Aquila House made a clean sweep in the Under-8 age category, with Akindu Gihansa claiming the boys’ title and Shenalya Galappaththi winning the girls’ title.

Adding to the festivities, the performances by the school brass band, cultural and dancing teams displays by karate, gymnastics and drill teams mesmerised the audience with their captivating performances, further enhancing the spirit of unity and celebration during the Lyceum Kurunegala’s annual athletic meet.

Dr. Shilpa Fernando, a proud Lyceum athlete and winner of discus throw and shot putt events at the Junior National Athletic Championship, was the chief guest at the event. Nayana Senevirathne, the Assistant Secretary of the Ministry of Sports of North Western Province, Sameera Hewage, Senior Executive and Vice President of Sports, Fitness and Wellness Innovation at Lyceum Global Holdings, Nethan Wijesinghe, the Principal of Lyceum International School, Panadura as well as principals from the Kurunegala area and the Lyceum school’s management, graced the event.
