Cabinet approves education reform implementation
View(s):The Cabinet has approved the implementation of overall education reforms recommended by the President-chaired Cabinet sub-committee.
Education Minister Dr Susil Premajayantha’s five main recommendations for creating a suitable administrative framework primarily include school classification based on international standards.
The creation of 350 school boards, which will incorporate the current 314 zonal education offices, in order to guarantee the reliability of teacher supervision, school-based assessments, and school supervision was also approved.
Dividing the whole educational system into 1,220 school clusters, with 8-12 schools in each cluster, and designating one or more secondary schools as leading schools, and the recruitment of the required personnel for the Teaching Service and Education Administration Services in Sri Lanka, are included in the proposal.
Moreover, 9 provinces will each have 9 educational reform units established. Zonal education offices will be expanded in phases, from 100 to 122, in accordance with priority and scientific rankings.
The proposed initiatives align with the National Education Policy Framework 2023-2033, which was designed with the goal of achieving full national development by 2048 and offering all students in the nation access to high-quality education and opportunities.
This framework encompasses changes that the Lankan education sector must go through, particularly in the areas of organisational structure, curriculum, and evaluation system. (NA)
