Chemistry, the study of matter, plays a crucial role in various scientific advancements, including developments in smart and renewable materials, sustainable technology, alternative energy, agriculture, food science, pharmaceutical and cosmeceutical technology, nanotechnology, and nuclear technology. As a central science, Chemistry opens numerous career opportunities in diverse sectors. Therefore, providing a robust Chemistry-based education is essential to preparing students for competitive roles in academia and industry.

The Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, established by the Act of Parliament No. 15 of 1972, is a government-approved charity and professional body dedicated to the advancement of Chemical Science and the practice of Chemistry in Sri Lanka. As the successor to the Chemical Society of Ceylon (founded in 1941), the Institute is one of the oldest scientific bodies in Sri Lanka. Recognised as a Degree Awarding Institute under Section 25A of the Universities Act No. 16 of 1978, the Institute’s annually elected council governs its operations, ensuring all profits are reinvested into the Institute to promote Chemistry education and awareness in Sri Lanka.

Since 2021, the Institute has been offering the Bachelor of Science Honours (BSc Hons) degree in Chemical Science, alongside the longstanding Graduateship in Chemistry Programme (GIC). The BSc Hons degree, accredited by the University Grants Commission (UGC), is a four-year full-time programme adhering to the
Sri Lanka Quality Framework (SLQF) Level 6, designed to provide a comprehensive education in Chemistry. This degree programme aims to foster economic benefits and sustainable development in Sri Lanka through manufacturing, value addition, and contributions to global chemical research.

The GIC, a four-year professional qualification accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) since 2012, has been recognised as an alternative qualification to a Science Degree with Chemistry as a subject by the Government of Sri Lanka since
1986. The University Grants Commission has confirmed that the GIC meets the basic requirements for postgraduate Chemistry programmes in Sri Lankan universities.

Both the BSc Hons and GIC programmes offer foundational and intermediate courses in organic, physical, inorganic, analytical, and biochemistry in the first two years, followed by a range of industry-based optional courses. Students can also pursue research-oriented subjects with advanced theoretical concepts in Chemistry. The BSc Hons program includes a unique subsidiary management component, which, combined with chemical science, prepares students for the competitive job market.

Students in these programmes gain practical experience through hands-on coursework during the first three years. Senior students may choose a research project or internship based on their GPA. The Institute boasts a faculty of distinguished scholars and experts from top universities and industries in Sri Lanka, ensuring high-quality education delivered by senior academics and professionals.

To support students’ educational journeys, the Institute offers various financial aid options, including scholarships for underprivileged students, merit-based scholarships, bursaries, and sports scholarships.

The Institute of Chemistry Ceylon provides a gateway of opportunities for aspiring scientists. Admissions for the 2024 intake are now open. Join the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon to pursue your passion for science!
