Empowering School level Leaders in IOT Interschool IoT competition INCOHST with NCHS

INCOHST 2024, the annual Interschool IoT (Internet of Things) event organized by Nawaloka College of Higher Studies (NCHS), was a significant initiative aimed at fostering IoT awareness among Sri Lankan students. The event also served as a platform for young innovators to develop IoT-based solutions addressing various social needs.

Sponsored by the Swinburne University of Technology and supported by the Sunday Times and Daily Mirror as the print media sponsors, and EduWire as the Digital  media sponsor, INCOHST 2024 drew widespread attention and participation.

In preparation for the competition, students from across the island attended an intensive workshop conducted by NCHS. The workshop, led by industry experts,  provided participants with essential insights into IoT technologies and their applications. This interactive session set the stage for the students to develop innovative solutions for the final event.

Grand Finale

The grand finale took place on May 31st at the Nawaloka Hospital Auditorium, featuring 50 participating schools that presented unique IoT innovations. The event was presided over by Chief Guest E.M. Chamalee Edirisinghe, Deputy Director of the Zonal Education Office in Colombo. Other notable dignitaries included Dr. Jayantha Dharmadasa, Chairman and  Mr. Victor Ramanan, Deputy Chairman/CEO of NCHS. The judging panel comprised esteemed professionals such as Dr. Alan Robertson, Dean of Studies at NCHS; Dr. Kulari Lokuge Dona, Director of the Knox Innovation Opportunity and Sustainability Centre at Swinburne University of Technology in Australia; Dr. Malinda De Silva, Lecturer at NCHS; Mr. Indika Gunathilake, Senior Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at Arimac Lanka Private Limited; and Dr. (Eng.) Lalith Liyanage, CEO and General Manager of Ceylon Fisheries Corporation in Sri Lanka.

Winning schools

The competition highlighted several outstanding innovations. Taxila Central College in Horana emerged as the winner with their project, “IoT Based Greenhouse Automation,” which demonstrated the potential of IoT in enhancing agricultural practices. Maris Stella College in Thimbirigaskatua secured second place with their “Health Grid” project, which integrated IoT solutions for hospital management, showcasing a significant advancement in healthcare technology. Nalanda College in Colombo earned third place with “Docbot,” an innovative healthcare assistant.

In addition to the top three winners, special awards were given to Sri Sumangala College in Panadura for the Best Concept, Musaeus College in Colombo for the Best Prototype, and Pakkiyam National School in Matale for the Best Presenter awarded to Manoharan Nivitha.
