The Tourist Board Auditorium in Colombo buzzed with excitement on the 1st of June as Lyceum Assessments held its inaugural Spelling Bee competition, a significant event for the Western Province districts of Colombo, Gampaha and Kalutara. This competition marks the beginning of what is set to become an annual nationwide event starting next year, showcasing the spelling prowess of young minds across Sri Lanka.

Inspired by the world-renowned international Spelling Bee, Lyceum Assessments aimed to provide a dynamic platform for participants to experience the excitement of this global phenomenon locally, giving young Sri Lankans a chance to participate in a similar competition and hone their linguistic skills. The event saw participants from not only Lyceum schools but also from various other schools, all gathered to test their linguistic skills and compete for top honours.

Out of 350 district-wide candidates, 73 finalists emerged, representing a blend of exceptional talent from various age groups. These finalists competed fiercely in three categories, Grades 4-5, Grades 6-7 and Grades 8-9. The finalists demonstrated their mastery of language in a series of rigorous rounds designed to test both their spelling and comprehension abilities.

The highlight of the event was the crowning of the champions. Lyceum International School Panadura and Lyceum International School Nugegoda proudly produced the winners for all three age groups. Each champion was awarded a monetary prize, a trophy, a medal and certificates, celebrating their remarkable achievements. In fact Spelling Bee did not forget to applaud the efforts of the other young finalists as all finalists received medals and certificates too.

The event was graced by management members from various schools, including Lyceum International Schools, Stafford International, St. Thomas’ College, Ilma International Girls’ School and other esteemed institutions, to represent the Finalists from those respective schools.

Lyceum Assessments, established in 2021 as a subsidiary of Lyceum Global Holdings and an Edexcel-approved examination center, remains dedicated to conducting competitive international examinations. The Department of Artistic Examinations under Lyceum Assessments administer a range of artistic examinations, including annual speech and drama exams, public speaking exams, art exams and the Spelling Bee. These examinations offer numerous benefits to individuals and society, making them an essential component of arts education and cultural enrichment.

With this inaugural Spelling Bee, Lyceum Assessments has set a high standard for future competitions, contributing significantly to the development of strong language skills and a lifelong appreciation for the richness of words.
