The ongoing non-academic staff strike is likely to end within the coming week, State Minister of Education Suren Raghavan told Parliament.

The Minister said the 38 percent salary increment given to academic staff might have fueled the protest, adding that the Government requires 1.8 billion rupees to meet their demands.

200,000 students were affected as a result of the ongoing strike carried out by 18 trade unions of 12,700 members.

Co-Secretary of the Inter-University Trade Union Federation K L D G Richmond said that their demands were to increase the monthly compensation allowance and amend income disparities which have prevailed since 2016.

While expecting to call off the strike by next week, Mr Richmond said that the loss faced by students was immeasurable.

“We warned authorities that students will face a major loss if we go into a strike action, but they did not listen to us for eight years. This was our last resort,” Mr Richmond said.
