Students in Sri Lanka were becoming less interested in attending schools and more drawn to private instruction since they have lost faith in the country’s educational system, Education Minister Dr Susil Premajayantha has said.

The government has been attempting to fill positions in the Sri Lanka Education Administration Service (SLEAS) and teaching service.

On Thursday (6), Minister Premajayantha told Parliament that a decrease in the birth rate has led to a corresponding decrease in the number of students being admitted to Grade 1 classes in schools.

The country’s yearly birth rate, which was 330,000 a few years ago, has now dropped to 300,000.

Minister Premajayantha predicted that in the near future, there will be fewer admissions to Grade 1 as a result. (NA)
