Lankan UN Peacekeeper honoured with Dag Hammarskjöld medal

A Sri Lankan UN Peacekeeper was among 61peacekeepers posthumously honoured with the Dag Hammarskjöld medal at a recent event held at the UN Headquarters in New York.
Lance Corporal M G L Deshapriya, 42, of the Sri Lanka Army Service Corps who passed away in February 2023 following a sudden cardiac arrest while serving in Mali on a peacekeeping mission was among 61 peacekeepers from 33 countries honoured.
The UN recently observed the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, honouring over two million peacekeepers from 125 countries who have served in 71 operations around the world since1948.
Secretary-General António Guterres laid a wreath to honour the more than 4,300 women and men who have lost their lives while serving under the United Nations flag since 1948.
The Secretary-General also presided over a ceremony at which Dag Hammarskjöld medals were awarded posthumously to the 61 peacekeepers.
“The memory of all fallen Blue Helmets reminds us of the tragic human costs of conflict. Each loss underscores the urgent need to prevent violence, protect the most vulnerable, and spare no efforts to end these deadly conflicts,” Guterres said.
Lance Corporal Deshapriya (42), a father of two children was a resident of Medawachchiya. He was married to Deepani Saman Kumari.
