More than 90 people, declared as ‘designated persons’ for their alleged involvement in terrorism-related activities, including fundraising, have been removed from the Defence Ministry list.

However, the ban on fifteen entities, including the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the National Thowheed Jama’ath (NTJ), remains, according to an Extraordinary Gazette notification issued.

The revised gazette notification listing proscribed organisations and designated persons was issued on June 3, thereby amending the list published on June 8, 2023.

The last year’s gazette included 301 names. The ban on 15 groups included in last year’s list continues to remain.

The list of names included those who were initially included for their alleged links with terrorist activities and the Easter Sunday bombing investigations.

The notice was issued by the Defence Ministry Secretary, Gen. Kamal Gunaratne, in keeping with the revised publication of the designated persons, groups, and entities under Section 4(7) of United Nations Regulation No. 1 of 2012.

Aside from the LTTE and NTJ, other groups that continue to remain on the list include the Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation (TRO), the World Tamil Movement (WTM), the Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE), Jama’athe Milla’athe Ibrahim (JMI), Willayath As Seylani (WAS), and the Sri Lanka Islamic Student Movement (SLISM).
