President Ranil Wickremesinghe will be among the regional leaders who will attend the swearing-in of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Council of Ministers today at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.

Aside from President Wickremesinghe, others in the Sri Lankan delegation are Presidential Secretary Saman Ekanayake and Foreign Secretary Aruni Wijewardene. They will be joined by an acting additional secretary and the Chief of Protocol from the Foreign Ministry, and officers of the Presidential Security Division.

The Sri Lankan delegation will leave for India this morning on an Air India flight to attend the ceremony early in the evening. Following the ceremony, the leaders, including Mr. Wickremesinghe, will attend a banquet hosted by Indian President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The Sri Lankan delegation is due to return to Colombo tomorrow.

Besides Mr. Wickremesinghe, leaders from Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, the Maldives, Seychelles and Mauritius have also been invited to today’s ceremony.

Pakistan’s and Myanmar’s leaders, however, have not been invited.

In Colombo, the Indian High Commission stated that the visit of the leaders to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his third consecutive term “is in keeping with the highest priority accorded by India to its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy and ‘SAGAR’ vision.”

Meanwhile, Indian media reported that talks on the composition of the new cabinet in Mr. Modi’s National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government continued into yesterday. Some of the NDA’s alliance partners have reportedly sought some top portfolios.
