Two people were killed in a car-train collision yesterday morning at an unprotected railway crossing between Wattala and Enderamulla.
The accident occurred when the car attempted to pass the crossing while the Badulla-Colombo express train was approaching, police said.
They said the car had driven onto the railway crossing while the bell-and-light warning system was operational. The car was hit for the second time by a train coming from the opposite direction.
The railway crossing lacked gates, and residents say it was a virtual death trap.
The victims were identified as Kelum Thushara and W.K.N. Ratnapala.
The residents said they tried to rescue one of the victims from the wreck but had to abandon the effort when they saw the second train coming. - Pix by Lal S.Kumara and Sarath Chinthaka
