Devindya Oshini Gunawardhana, a student at Wycherley International School, has been officially awarded the title of Woman FIDE Master (WFM) by the World Chess Federation (FIDE). This prestigious title comes as a result of her outstanding victory in the Under-12 category at the FIDE World Cadets Chess Championship 2023, held in Egypt.

Initially, Oshini was granted the WFM title conditionally, as she had not yet achieved the required ELO rating of 1900. However, she has since surpassed this milestone, and FIDE has now formally conferred the title upon Oshini, who became the youngest chess player to claim the achievement.

At just 12-years-old, Oshini is among the top female chess players in Sri Lanka, demonstrating remarkable progress and dedication to the sport. Her achievements have set a new benchmark for young chess players in the country, and she continues to strive for excellence in her journey to bring further accolades to Sri Lanka.
