To Lalith, education as a whole was sine-qua-none of his existence. He believed that an educated society can only be created by a leadership that values education and educated people, it was his belief, that educating a child as an investment for the future, that laid the foundation of the Mahapola Scholarship programme he conceptualized and implemented in 1981. Over the years Mahapola scholarship program have benefitted over 500000 needy students in pursuing their higher education.
After his untimely demise, Lalith Athulathmudali Foundation (LAF) was formed in 1994, to carry forward the ideals of the late leader. LAF have been engaged in many educational & social activities and this programme commenced in 2023 in collaboration with the SLIIT Today 50 students who are following degree courses at SLIIT enjoy the benefits of the scholarship grants. A further number of students will become eligible for the scholarship grant in the 2024 July intake.
Sri Lanka Institute for Information Technology (SLIIT), is a private educational institute specialising in various fields, such as technology, management etc. SLIIT was established, in a 25acre block of land that was earmarked by the late founder of the Mahapola Scholarship Trust Fund for the purpose of establishing a university of international standards. Since 1999 SLIIT has been catering to the needs of youth in pursing their higher education goals and today, it has evolved into one of the premier educational entities in the country, known for its commitment to academic excellence.
Late Lalith Athulathmudali strongly believed in strengthening of educational, scientific, technical, international languages and research studies would make the youth better suited for the development of the country and introduced many reforms during his short tenure as the Minister of Education.
The mission of the LAF- SLIIT Scholarship Program is to create affordable and accessible education for individuals seeking higher education opportunities. The foundation strives to break down financial barriers, ensuring that deserving students have the resources they need to pursue their academic goals. The ultimate vision is to empower individuals through education, fostering a cycle of knowledge, opportunity, and community upliftment.
.In collaboration with SLIIT, the LAF- SLIIT Scholarship Program offers scholarship grants annually, to students who need financial assistance to pursue their academic career. Eligibility for the LAF-SLIIT Scholarship Program is determined based on academic performance & financial need. Applicants undergo a comprehensive selection process for the scholarship.
Building on its success, Lalith Athulathmudali Foundation is embarking on its next ambitious venture: the creation of a university. In 2022, The President offered the Lalith Athulathmudali Foundation the opportunity to establish a postgraduate university to honor the name of late Lalith Athulathmudali which the members of the Foundation embraced with gratitude & enthusiasm. This project would expand the Foundation’s impact by providing even more comprehensive educational opportunities. The establishment of the Lalith Athulathmudali International Postgraduate University (Campus) will mark the culmination of the founder’s vision, furthering the mission of making higher education affordable and accessible to all.
Together with SLIIT the Lalith Athulathmudali Foundation, through the Scholarship Program will continue to honor the founder’s legacy by providing much needed support to students who have the potential to effect positive change in their communities. By investing in education, the program not only helps individuals overcome financial constraints, but also contributes to the broader development and prosperity of society.
