Some estate workers renting their houses

Nearly 60,000 houses have been built for workers as separate units at different stages by various donors and agencies.

Workers on the estates are provided
7 perches of land and 3 perches of land for common amenities.

However, about 20-25 per cent of these housing units are given on rent to outside parties.

Renting out these housing units may
be illegal, but workers continue to do so to earn more.

Historically, workers on estates were provided housing on the estates as line-rooms under the British era.

Following the Sirima-Shastri pact, over 500,000 workers were repatriated to India leaving behind some empty housing.

Following the expiration of the pact, they continued to live on the estates. With the population increasing after successive generations this led to a need for an increased number of housing units. An average family has about two members working on an estate.

The regional plantation companies (RPCs) do not get involved in stopping the workers from renting the houses provided to them.
