Sri Lanka Navy recruits 458 men and women
View(s):Sri Lanka Navy’s 254th intake saw 458 recruits join its regular and volunteer forces at a ceremony at the main parade ground of SLNS Nipuna, Boossa on Friday (14).
Among the recruits were 355 (274 male and 81 female sailors) belonging to the regular force, and 103 (37 male and 66 female sailors) belonging to the volunteer force.
Commander Northwestern Naval Area Rear Admiral Nalindra Jayasinghe graced the event as chief guest while members of the Maha Sangha, Commander Southern Naval Area Rear Admiral Chinthaka Kumarasinghe, Deputy Area Commander Commodore Indika Gunawardena, senior officers from the Navy Headquarters and Southern Naval Command, officers of SLNS Nipuna, Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy W M G A Kumara, and sailors as well as parents of newly passed out naval personnel were present.
Recruits who excelled in their performance during the basic training were acknowledged for their outstanding achievements, and awards were presented by the chief guest to Recruit E A M L S Jayasinghe who earned the trophy for Best Recruit, Woman Recruit P A P M Peramuna won the award for Highest Aggregate in All Subjects, Recruit W M P K M Dissanayake won the award for Best Marksman, and the awards for Best Sportsman or woman were won by Recruit N H W K Dissanayake and Woman Recruit W A N A Weerapperuma. The ‘Sagara’ Division was selected as the Best Division of the 254th intake. Newly passed out recruits performed a drill display, while the Navy band and cultural troupe performed.
